The 2012-13 season will be filled with intrigue, passion and revenge as Klein Oak Theatre announced its upcoming shows, Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Sweeney Todd. Directors Matt Robinson and Christopher Pruett revealed the 2012-13 show titles to excited students and parents at the September 6 theatre meeting. We also launched our new online ticketing system for advance sales on reserved seating for our first show of the season, The Curious Savage.
The 2012-13 season opens with The Curious Savage. The Curious Savage is the comedic story of Ethel P. Savage, who has been left $10 million by her husband and wants to make the best use of it despite the efforts of her stepchildren to get their hands on it. They know the widow’s wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of it, they commit her to a sanitarium. But what the stepchildren don’t count on is Mrs. Savage finding refuge and friends during her stay there.
Our second play of the season, Les Liaisons dangereuses is by Christopher Hampton adapted from the 1782 novel of the same title by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The plot focuses on the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, rivals who, in their boredom, play cruel games to humiliate and entangle the emotions of young lovers. Their targets are the virtuous and married Madame de Tourvel and Cécile de Volanges, a young girl who has fallen in love with her music tutor, the Chevalier Danceny. In order to gain their trust, Merteuil and Valmont pretend to help the secret lovers so they can use them later in their own treacherous schemes. Show dates for Les Liaisons Dangereuses are 7 pm November 2, 3 & 5. Some content may not be appropriate for our younger audience.
The Klein Oak Fine Arts Department 2013 musical is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Sweeney Todd is a 1979 musical thriller with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and libretto by Hugh Wheeler. The musical is based on the 1973 play Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Christopher Bond. Set in 19th century England, the musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, alias Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years’ transportation on trumped-up charges. When he finds out that his wife poisoned herself after being assaulted by the judge who transported him, he vows revenge on the judge and, later, the whole world. He teams up with a piemaker, Mrs. Lovett, and opens a barbershop in which he slits the throats of customers and has them baked into pies. Sweeney Todd opened on Broadway in 1979 and in London’s West End in 1980. In addition to several revivals the musical has been presented by opera companies and was adapted for film. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Show dates for Sweeney Todd are 7 pm January 25 & 26, and February 1, 2 & 4, 2013. Auditions for Klein Oak students are the week of November 12-16. Some content may not be appropriate for our younger audience.
