Klein Oak Theatre Announces 2014-15 Season

Klein Oak Theatre Directors Matthew Robinson,  Christopher Pruett and Leigh Harrison announced upcoming show titles for the 2014-15 season – A Clockwork Tempest and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Sept. 4 theatre parent meeting.

The 2014-15 season opens with Lend Me a Tenor at 7 pm Sept. 19, 20 & 22. Lend Me a Tenor , a comedy by Ken Ludwig, is directed by Matthew Robinson. The play was produced on both the West End (1986) and Broadway (1989). It received nine Tony Award nominations. A Broadway revival opened in 2010. On a historic night at the Cleveland Opera Company, world-famous tenor Tito Morelli is to perform in Otello . Through a series of mishaps, Tito receives a double dose of tranquilizers, causing the house manager to believe he is dead and setting off a chain reaction of slapstick and mistaken identity. Refer to the to view the company of Lend Me a Tenor .

Coming up in November, our second play of the season, A Clockwork Tempest is a steampunk-stylized adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest , written and directed by Christopher Pruett. Shakespeare is believed to have written The Tempest in 1610–11, and it was thought by many critics to be the last play he wrote alone. In the mid-19th century, theatre productions began to reinstate the original Shakespearean text, and in the 20th century, critics and scholars undertook a significant re-appraisal of the play’s value, to the extent that it is now considered to be one of Shakespeare’s greatest works. It has been adapted numerous times in a variety of styles and formats: in at least 46 operas, orchestral works and songs and in literature, paintings and in film. Show dates for A Clockwork Tempest are 7 pm Nov. 7, 8 & 10. Refer to the Call Board to view the company of A Clockwork Tempest .

The Klein Oak Fine Arts Department 2015 musical is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels . Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a 2004 comedy musical, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and book by Jeffrey Lane; it’s based on the 1988 film of the same name. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two competing con men living on the French Riviera. At first, the suave and experienced Lawrence Jameson takes the rookie con man, Freddy, under his wing. But soon, Freddy tries to compete directly with Lawrence. The competition comes to a peak when they agree that the first con man to extract $50,000 from the female heiress, Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town forever. The musical premiered on Broadway in 2005 and ran for 626 performances despite mixed reviews. It has since received tours and international productions. Show dates for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are 7 pm Jan. 30 & 31 and Feb. 6, 7 & 9, 2015. Auditions for Klein Oak students are the week of Nov. 17-21.
